Sweet History? Trail – new publication from The Architecture Centre

With the summer holidays hot on our heels and children to be occupied, The Architecture Centre has worked with young people from the Knowle West Media Centre to create an active and engaging walking trail exploring the impact of the sugar and slave trades on buildings and locations in central Bristol. From start to finish the whole walk takes approximately three hours and provides an excellent opportunity to see Bristol from a different perspective this summer.

Copies of the Sweet History? Trail can be picked up from the Architecture Centre or downloaded from www.sweethistory.org The website also contains further learning resources, podcasts and an interactive map where you can find out more about the history of Bristol's buildings featured on the trail.

The Sweet History? project is documented in an exhibition at The Architecture Centre until Sunday 14th September. Supporting the website it explains a background to the project and provides access to www.sweethistory.org. Further events with schools are planned for the autumn to link in with this project.

Over the last year and a half the young people have worked with artists and historians researching the Sweet History? project which has helped to develop an educational resource and website: www.sweethistory.org. The website aims to provide a source of information for young people and life long learners to engage with Bristol's built environment heritage and its links to the slave trade. This project is part of Abolition 200, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the international slave trade.
The Sweet History? project has received a Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots award and was supported by the Bristol Visual Arts Consortium.
