World famous Shakespeare’s Globe comes to Bristol

Romeo & JulietShakespeare's Globe is delighted to announce the return of its hugely successful touring production of Romeo and Juliet - and a brand new production of The Winter's Tale. Bristol audiences will have the opportunity to see both open air shows this August as part of the Bristol Shakespeare Festival.

A small troupe will perform Shakespeare's classic tale of star-crossed lovers in the stunning grounds of the Old Bowling Green, Bristol on 31st July- 3rd August. The production has been re-cast and re-imagined by director Elizabeth Freestone, recently on attachment at the National Theatre Studio. Romeo and Juliet will once again include Anthony Lamble's innovative campervan design.

Director John Dove will be revisiting The Winter's Tale at the same venue on 13th- 16th August, after his hit 2005 production of the play at the Globe Theatre, where he has also directed Measure for Measure and In Extremis. Part family drama, part fairy tale, the play, in keeping with the spirit of the old principles of touring theatre, will present a troupe of actors entertaining crowds with a stripped down version of Shakespeare's magical story of jealousy, love and redemption.

The plays are ideal for those new to Shakespeare, as well as those who know and love his work. Dominic Dromgoole, Artistic Director of Shakespeare's Globe, says; "The Globe was born out of a touring company culture, and that culture remained vital to it while it flourished. We are delighted to be exploring again the tradition of taking Shakespeare into non-theatrical spaces."
