For its 10th anniversary season Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory offers one of its biggest companies to date to recreate all the passion and sweep, the joy, farce and tragedy of Shakespeare’s Roman world.
Two great tragedies in which Shakespeare explores truths and legends of classical history: the assassination of Julius Caesar and the doomed romance between the Roman Mark Antony and the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra.
Though wonderfully contrasting in character – and complete in themselves - both plays turn on intense collisions between the personal and political. Julius Caesar sees Brutus, a man of huge integrity, persuaded to murder his friend to protect the political ideals of the Roman Republic. Antony & Cleopatra portrays an all-consuming love invaded and destroyed by the Imperial tyranny that followed that fatal decision.
