Revealing Bristol's mysterious side
Welcome to Haunt Bristol! This site seeks to uncover the hidden heritage and spooky secrets of the area whilst also delving into all things, alternative, Gothic and Goth within the city and beyond. From dark tales of the docklands to dramatic architecture, street art, and even covering the thriving underground music scene, this a platform that opens-up another side to place.
We explore the dark, mysterious and the unusual – often engaging with the underground and uncovering under-represented stories – so you can see another angle of Bristol. There is so much to explore! Informed by cultural organisations, creative individuals and businesses from across the region, Haunt is a platform that knits together a range of events, journalism and research stories on alternative, historical and eerie topics into one easily accessible location.
Haunt Bristol is a place of pirates and mysterious maritime encounters, a chance to look further into characterful local haunts and unpack some of the stories of the area, including the tale of Blackbeard’s birthplace, encounters on The Avon, sensational street art and locations with layers of history such as The Clifton Suspension Bridge. We will also delve into a range of periods from Bristol’s past, sensitively engaging with histories that can be difficult to discuss, and exploring how we can understand place in new ways through learning, awareness and education.
Haunt Bristol is the sister site of Haunt Manchester: a Manchester Metropolitan University project exploring the more mysterious side of the Greater Manchester region. In turn, Haunt Bristol is brought to you by Visit Bristol working in co-ordination with the Manchester Metropolitan University team and their related research centres: The Manchester Centre for Gothic Studies, The Manchester Centre for Public History and Heritage and the Encountering Corpses project.
Expect plenty of gritty local history, hidden heritage, wonderful walking tours, unusual shopping opportunities, exciting events, Halloween ideas, underground culture, bold creativity and so much more.
